Joyful Beginnings at Ethandweni Children’s Home

Our full first day at the Ethandweni Children’s Home was as joyful as we anticipated.

After breakfast and a morning meeting, the team and some of the kids visited Gogo Liza, grandmother to three of the children at the home. Gogo is 91 years old and supported by the home as she needs support with her day-to-day necessities.

During this time, we had the opportunity to hear her share life story with us – what a privilege to be in her presence!

Returning home, after a delicious chicken stew, a lively game of soccer ensued—it was a good thing we brought more balls as they get much use! There were plenty of spectators who cheered or spent time with some team members making bracelets and necklaces on the sideline.

On top of the energetic game, the team then trekked out on our annual adventurous mountain hike with the children. The walk was full of laughter, antics, and play. A few of the Mains’l team members stayed behind to protect the beautiful vegetable gardens from the marauding baboons. It certainly was a challenge as we had over 30 encounters with the thieving baboons!

The evening dance party started! What an experience to see and participate in. We all learned new dance moves that are customary to the local culture, and had a blast.

Reflecting on the day, Kayla shared: “It’s eye-opening to experience a glimpse of someone’s world who appears to have so little but truly is rich in many ways. It’s been a beautiful first couple of days being able to be welcomed into the homes and communities of others and support them in different ways. They treat you more like family than strangers and are genuinely happy to see you. It’s welcoming and inspiring to be here.”

Is there any better way to end the day than with a dance party?

We have been truly chuffed; what will the coming days bring?
